Our first weekend away of 2010 was a trip to the Peak District. The principal walk was a challenging one along Kinder Scout ridge. This is a famous location, particularly as it was the site of a mass trespass, which led the founding of the Ramblers movement. Sally Holmes, who organised the weekend, had a somewhat phallic-shaped baton projecting from her rucksack to mark the 75th anniversary of the trespass. This is then meant to be passed on to other walking groups.
Those of us used to Sally's walks know she likes to go at a fair pace, but this was rather hampered by deep snow on the ground. As a result, we didn't finish walking until about 7pm, by which time it was pitch dark. Andy Bates and I, who were both staying in Eyam. We ate our tea in a pub half-way back to our accommodation, as we were so late we were worried that we might miss food being served in Eyam.
The second day, the walk, over the moors starting from Bretton Youth Hostel, was curtailed. It was down on the programme as 14 miles, but as most people were exhausted from the previous day, a shorter walk was a good idea. Nevertheless, it was another enjoyable weekend and I can particularly recommend the Miners Arms in Eyam, if anyone wishes to stay there in future.
